Flap Styles and Envelope Designs

FLAP STYLES

The shape of the flap on an envelope will determine its function and its compatibility with automated inserting equipment.

The pointed flap is elegant, traditional, and more formal but is not recommended for lasering or automated inserting equipment.

The commercial flap is standard on envelopes used for business correspondence and commercial use. This envelope works well on automated inserting as well as lasering equipment.

The square flap is used mostly for invitations and announcements and is commonly called the "A" series. Inserting on automatic equipment is not recommended with square flap envelopes.

The mailpoint flap can be found on some styles of booklet and catalog envelopes but is being replaced by the more modern wallet flap.

The wallet flap is similar to a square flap but with rounded corners. It will sometimes be substituted for the commercial flap on business correspondence. This is the standard flap on most booklet, catalog and specialty commercial envelopes. This envelope can be used on some automated lasering and inserting equipment.

COMMERCIAL ENVELOPES

Preferred for Business Mailings

The commercial flap is standard on envelopes used primarily for business correspondence and commercial use such as invoices, statements, and some direct marketing mailings. These envelopes come with or without a window. The standard “No. 10" size normally accompanies your basic 8 ½" x 11" letterhead, since when folded in thirds, it fits nicely therein. This envelope works well in automatic inserting operations. The commercial envelope is available in a variety of sizes. The standard “No. 9” is generally used as a Business Reply or Courtesy Reply envelope.

BOOKLET ENVELOPES

Preferred for Business Mailings

The booklet envelope is generally used for sales literature, annual reports and a wide variety of business materials. The benefit of using a booklet envelope is that the enclosures can be easily inserted by hand or machine, since the flap is on the long dimension. This feature distinguishes the booklet envelope from the open end or catalog envelope which has the flap on the short dimension. It comes in a wide variety of sizes.

SQUARE ENVELOPES

Not recommended for Business Mailings
This envelope is not recommended for automated inserting equipment. Although it works well on lasering equipment, it does not meet the USPS aspect ratio and will incur a mailing surcharge. This envelope is generally used for announcements and special marketing promotions.

A-SERIES ENVELOPES

Not recommended for Business Mailings
For announcements, small booklets and specialty business announcements, the "A" series envelope is very popular. This envelope is not recommended for automated inserting equipment, but works well on lasering operations. The envelope comes in a wide variety of sizes depending on the application.

OPEN-END ENVELOPES

Not recommended for Business Mailings
Also called catalog envelopes, the opening is on the shorter dimension. Unlike booklet envelopes, this envelope cannot be processed through automatic inserting equipment and is not recommended for lasering procedures. It is generally used for magazines and large booklets.
